Beginning To Teach

SupplyTeaching

This guide for supply teaching has been collated by a small group of senior teachers who have reflected upon their experiences with and as supply teachers.

What's expected of supply teachers?

  • Well organised and have work ready for the day
  • Willing and happy to teach the class that is allocated to them
  • Ready to undertake any tasks that are expected of them during the day
  • Able to keep the students working productively throughout the day
  • Firm, positive, flexible and caring
  • Able to ask for help when necessary
  • Be presentably dressed

On arrival at school make sure you:

Go to administration/deputy head’s office and introduce yourself. Ask where to find the classroom(s) you’ll be teaching in.

Look through the work that has been left see the necessary people to get what you need.  (Make sure this work is completed.)

Ask the Administration for the daily routine for the day.

Introduce yourself to peers in neighbouring classrooms or staffroom before the start of school or at the first break.

If you are on playground duty, ask where in the school that will be and at what time.

Introduce yourself to the children in primary school, Write your name on the board and tell them how you would like to be addressed.

Tell the children what your expectations are in terms of work and behaviour and let them know there will be time for fun too!

Be seen to be enjoying yourself, to be on “top of things”. Many supply teachers have moved on to contract positions and eventually permanent employment.

Obtain a copy of the school’s Behaviour Management Policy or ask the Head teacher or staff about the school’s policy to ensure that what you do is consistent with the school approach.

Lastly

Leave the teacher a note to tell him/her what you have done. They appreciate it and may request you in future.
